someone at my work is leaving(theyve been there a few years), and people are putting together a collection to get something for them. i myself have only been working there since mid feb. of this year, and work there only 16 hrs a week, i'm 17 and dont have all that much money and was wondering how much do you think would be enough to put in? most other people are putting in either 10 or 5. It annoys me a bit why people cant just put in a pound or 2 without seeming bad, because most of us there are all teenagers - or just have the management buy them something. i just wondering what your views were on work collections?

I'm sure if you put in a couple of pounds with the words "sorry, all can afford, I'm skint!" no one will mind at all. Know what you mean though, I hate feeling 'obliged' to match what everyone else has put in, but as you've said, if that's all you can afford, it's all you can afford- sod em!
At my workplace we usually put in 2.50 - sounds really mean but there's around 40 on staff it mounts up to fair bit if everyone makes a contribution (trying to convince the bosses isn't always as easy tho!!)
At the end of this term we had 5 people leave :o\

Just put in what you feel is enough there are no rules to collections at work - besides, no one should be checking how much you put in!!
Hi Missjef,

Really, all money should be put into a box / envelope so nobody knows what everybody else has given.

You just give what you want to - 1 will be ok.
At my work (office of just under 30) we put 1 in for birthdays and usually 5 for weddings, leaving and babies. Personally, I would just say if you can't afford to match the others as there's nothing worse for the collector discovering someone has filled your envelope with shrapnel - one guy at our place always ends up putting 62p in or something, which is just rude.
Until last year at work, it was always up to the admin staff to organise collections, but after one year of having to organise and decide what to buy for 5 birthdays all in July, I had a hissy fit and now I just email staff with whoever has a birthday coming up and let someone else organise it!
We have collections for 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th etc birthdays, when people leave, have babies etc. We all put in either a pound or two pounds :) Think its a pound on a birthday and two on special occasions.
everyone at mine just puts a 1 in unless they are friend or the boss then they tend to put a bit more in. don't worry just put want you want in
We don't have a set amount to put in, it can be anything between 1-10. We don't normally do collections for Birthdays as we have a really large office, but collect for special birthdays, leaving, babies, weddings etc!

If someone doesn't have the money than nobody would be weird with them!

jsut thought i'd let you know, i put in 3, but i felt bad because i gave it to my friend at work and she put it in the envelope and wrote how much i had given in on the front of it! although she had written how much everyone else had put in just so she knows how much is in there.
