I totally accept that everyone must take responsibility for their actions however surely airlines should not allow people who are intoxicated to excess to fly. Also there is a lot of alcohol availabity at airports. Should the airports and airlines do more to prevent this.

that works sometimes, 237SJ, but not always. I have no idea if the tour company or the airline are being difficult, or if their mutual computers just aren't up to the job.
By the way I can name two airports I regularly fly from where you can smoke after check-in/airside and I know there are more.
I have been on a Flight where a passenger who was drunk was ordered off the plane before it took off ! So it does happen !
jno - it's the travel agent. They have a group booking ref but the airline will have an individual PNR for every passenger. My sister goes on a lot of walking holidays with a particular tour company and has had to hastle them to go to the airline and retrieve her ref so that she can check herself in/choose a seat. Sometimes the tour operator can`t be bothered.
I suspect there are those who need to get squiffy in order to cope with their aerophobia.
I wouldn't even say 'squiffy' just a few to relax you a little.

I'm scared of flying, a couple of drinks calms my nerves a bit.
It's nice to see people sitting down eating their dinner whilst enjoying a glass of wine on an aircraft and watching a film. It's part of their trip. They're happy, I`m happy. If they cross the threshold drunk though, they won`t get as far as their seat.
