Home Secretary Sajid Javid has struck a new agreement with his French counterpart to return channel migrants to France. The agreement will be back-dated to last October meaning that hundreds of migrants will be returned to France in the coming weeks. A step in the right direction – literally?

A drop in the ocean. But good symbolism. Now they have to ensure all illegal immigrants get returned promptly.
I agree it is a drop in the ocean OG but it's the underlying message for the future that is good.

This needs to be shouted from the hill-tops so any future illegals know their attempts will be futile, hopefully reducing the numbers willing to fund the pond life people traffickers.
well done Home sec, OG, surely it means going forward that any that make it here will go straight back? That's good isn't it?
But does it though ?

Some 539 migrants crossed the Dover Straits in 2018, a small number has been returned.

We'll see.

OG, as I understand it this is a new agreement signed within the past couple of days.
OG, as you say only time will tell.

For me though it will be all about managing the message. If we can get it back to the illegals that risking your life will be for nothing then many (not all) willl not try it.

For the non illegals or true Asylumn seekers there is still the option of seeking asylum in France. But most, of course dont fall into this category.
so does this not include those that arrive in trucks/ferries etc?

I presume so.
About time too, assuming it actually happens.
Yes. To not do so would just be encouraging the process....

'You're welcome to come and stay in Britain as long as you pay some cowboys to put you on a leaky dinghy to make a dangerous sea crossing to get here'

Good news day ;o)
I have no objection to legal migrants with skills to offer.
We don't need the illegal economic migrants, let's be honest if they had skills to offer the UK they would be entering the Country legally.

well, Ludwig, that does show commitment.
I doubt those put on the leaky boat are told the whole truth. I strongly suspect they are told they will be picked up and taken to the UK, which has then happened. The traffikers no doubt then encourage some of them (probably bribed) to text/wotsapp back to the others they have arrived safely. The News of the failures wont reach back.

That is why they need to manage the message to them that they will be sent back whatever. No houses, no benefits, no hordes of relatives to follow, just returned.
