I have a SANTIS-Communicator modem and I've installed drivers for it and now there is an annoying tray icon: 'Safely remove hardware' (which is obviously used to uninstall SANTIS drivers) How can I remove it from my tray (I cant find it in startup anywhere)?

I dont think you can remove it but in XP you can hide it. Right click an empty area of your task bar and select properties then put a tick in the hide inactive icons box in the task bar and start menu properties window.
Just to clarify, this icon is not for uninstalling the drivers, it is to allow you to unplug the modem from your computer (while the computer is on) without causing it damage. As Phantaxus says, you should be able to hide it using the method s/he describes.
I was a he last time I checked :)
