If you mean in comparison to am integrated or "portable" unit, it works in exactly the same way.
Air conditioners have two heat exchangers and refrigerant is pumped between the two. On heat exchanger absorbs heat from the room and the other radiates heat. In an integrated unit, the radiator is part of the main unit, and the heated air is carried outside by a hose. This has a number of disadvantages the main two being:

1) leakage of heat back into the room
2) Noise

With a split unit, the radiator, pump and cooling fan are outside. The two heat exchangers are connected by an insulated pipe. So the heat is radiated directly outside, and the noisiest components are outside as well.
