In this age of red buttons, Internet and picture phones, why is Teletext just as rubbish as it was 20 years ago?

It's not - It's worse.
BBC teletext on digital has far less info than is on the analogue service

Because it is 20 years old.
It was the first of its kind, a miracle of the time. But obviously, things have moved on since then.
It can't really be changed, as it has to remain compliant with the published specification.

When we all go digital, Teletex will finish so no point in updating it - just as Simeon says.
