Does anyone think that the experimental ITER fusion reactor being built in Cadarache France (17 billion euros spent so far) will sustain a stable burn for minutes or even hours when it is eventually finished ??

Not given it a lot of attention, but presumably that's the aim. If it disappoints then it'll still be a step along the way.
Just like the LHC, I'm sure that there will be problems along the way but the science sems sound enough, so I see no reason why the experiment shouldn't yield the expected results.
