I disagree. Anaesthetics are what makes *any* invasive surgery tolerable and in most cases, survivable. Without anaesthetics, the vast majority of people would die on the operating table due to shock. It's no good having the medical know-how to be able to remove and replace a kidney if the patient drops dead due to the trauma of being cut open and having one of their organs removed and replaced.

Hence, my vote for anaesthetics. Very underrated in my opinion.
The invention which has had the most proven impact on human life is that much forgotten creature the railway system. We might *** about how it is operated but imagine it is not there at all.
