I've charged and wiped all my info from my spare mobile phone to send to son. I've taken my sim out but as soon as I do that it won't turn on. Put my sim back in and it turns on. Makes no sense to me- it should turn on even without a sim in it - any thoughts?

Makes little sense to me also. Does it turn on with your son's SIM in it ? Or any other SIM ?

I haven't posted it to him yet and I don't have another sim to test it. How weird!
Maybe it doesn't want to leave.
In may be too early in the morning for me to take that in, but that seems a very techie explanation; and seems to suggest that Verizon phones have a design flaw. Mobiles are supposed to be active without a SIM to make emergency calls only, anyway.

Now you've put your SIM back in to reset the handset, does it work without the SIM now ?

Yes it now works without the sim. Not quite sure why it didn't before but I just reset it back to factory settings
