I have an SD card fitted in my Nikon D3200 camera. The card is 64GB in size and holds around 4700 photos in fine mode. I need to download close on 2000 photos from the card to my laptop by taking the card out of the camera and inserting it in the card reader fitted to my laptop. What I'd like to know is whether the camera will continue to number the photos sequentially when I reinsert the card back into the camera ie if the last photo file on the card is DSC1934, will the next photo I take be labelled DSC1935 after downloading the photos and reinserting the card in the camera? I don't want the files labelled from DSC0001 upwards if at all possible as I may need to combine all the files together at a later date and I don't want to batch renumber unless I really have to.

I want to download the all the photos taken to date on the card for safety reasons more than anything else.

Thank you.

Usually it will start from DSC0001 again once the card is formatted, however lots of cameras have a facility to decide on a start number for files on one of their menus- so it is more likely to be camera dependant- I shoot on Cannon so can't help you with your Nikon about menus :) xx
If you reinsert the card without formatting it it will go on sequentially ie last 'old' photo is DSC1935 next 'new' one will be DSC1936

Thank you kvalidir. I should have made clear that I didn't intend to format the card before reinserting it in the camera.
Assuming your laptop is a Windows machine, even if the following pictures do restart from 001 you can get Windows Explorer to list them in "time" order, so all the newest ones will appear last on the list.
