Storm Doris did some damage to my front garden wooden fence. Concrete support posts (3) disintegrated. Had one quote to build wall approx 12ft long 3ft high.Very plain. Price quoted £1,400. I was expecting about £800. Does quoted price seem seem high?

Whilst I'd not know, I'm unsurprised at the quoted figure.

There are websites that estimate the cost for various jobs for your part of the country. May find one i here somewhere ? https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=estimated+costs+of+houshold+jobs&;ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&ei=7Q7eWNGnFrLS8AfFn52YAw
get more quotes !

Thanks to you both. I'm trying to get other quotes, but it's a small job so of little interest. I'm just shocked at the cost, but then I've never had to commission a wall before.
Since this a wall rather than a fence, you may not have realised that excavation and a foundation is needed. Plus, it would need to be rendered, and some sort of capping placed on the top.

Try to get a "one man band to do the job. It'll work out cheaper. Maybe £1,000?

Thanks Builder. The foundation and topping was explained and he did seem to be convincingly professional. I can't find anybody prepared to make a recommendation and most of the contractors I've contacted aren't interested in such a small job, so I don't even have quotes to compare. I dread to think what it will cost me to have the side wall of house re-rendered, but that's a matter for another day!
Bane of the houseowner's life. Decent builders not interested in small jobs, and you are left with the rest (assuming you can find anyone) who aren't fully employed on the big high value ones. Multiple quotes ? Multiple interest would be a good start. Nightmare. Not just builders though, plumbers, electricians, etc. etc. etc.. Wonder one gets around to having anything done at all.
