Its possibly "Hazard" by Richard Marx....A hit in summer 1991

It could possibly be 'caught by the river' by The Doves.

Quite a slow, guitar song....

?Tim Buckley The River

I live by the river
And I hide my house away
Then just like the river
I can change my ways
Oh, if you come to love me
You would stay forever
Inside my heart
Inside my dreams
And time will fade
In time we'll love
In the street we walk as beggars
In the alley faithless kings
Ah, but it's the truth of life
That chains us in between
Those lost moments we steal
To keep our love alive
And our prize so tired after all the pain
And time will fade
In time we'll love

I much much prefer richard marx one!!
The River by Bruce Springsteen?
I think Spudqueen is right - it definately sounds like The River - Bruce Springsteen

Although its not slow, the line I live by the River appears in London Calling by the Clash.

Probably not what you are looking for but a great song!

take me to the river-al green?
somewhere down that crazy river - robbie robertson?
At the River by Groove Armada? Though I don't think any river is mentioned in the rather limited lyrics... it's a slow chill out song though.
i can only think of Take Me To The River - Al Green/ Talking Heads
Did you work out which it was?
long shot but was it "the river" by Mark Joseph??
