Some lagers will have preservatives added - hops are a natural preservative but 'ill after drinking' can most likely come form dirty glasses or bottle necks.

Beers can also have enzymes and anti oxidants added at the brewing stage to prolong shelf life.

Fosters is one of the most awful canned lagers I have ever had. If they had tried to brew 'essence of headache' they couldn't have done better !

I thought msg was just a flavour enhancer? If that's the case, obviously not used in lager...I can't see it,I would have thought it would have to be listed. Maybe the quantity he/she consumed?
Is your friend allergic to wheat and barley as well as msg? Does he/she have coeliac disease? This may be the answer.

I agree with whiffey-Fosters isn't lager. It's vile
Maybe your friend shouldn't have drunk 17 pints of the damn stuff
