This week on ITV news we have seen numerous reports on India's Mica mines along with scenes of child labour.

One has to ask, what can the ordinary TV viewer do to prevent this exploitation of children and even if some kind of action where to be taken, would it be robbing those less fortunate than us of a living?

Sadly there is nothing we can do to regulate working practices in other countries it took long enough to get some forms of control in this country and we still get cases of system abuse.
No, little we can do apart from remove the foreign aid paid to indi tht they dontt want anyway.

One also has to be careful when interfering in other countries, especially third world or developing ones. Often by boycotting child labour places it puts the child out of work and the family closer to starvation, remember these countries do not have a benefits system like ours. No work, no food.

Err, they tried enforced contraception. Remember the outcry?
//children should be in school, and not working// I couldnt agree more in an ideal world. But in a country of in excess of 1.2 Bn (as opposed t 64 m UK) we cannot think that things working here will work there.

Just because they have a Nuclear and Space program does not mean that all would be hunky dory if they spent the money on education of the lower casts.

With ITV being a commercial station, perhaps they are softening the ground for a charity to air their appeal during the commercial break, asking for £4 per month, which will provide the right tools and safety equipment, so as to make this work much safer?

Or am I just being rather cynical?

DB i agree with you - channel 4 news are the worst culprits for "special reports" IMHO
