Hi, I'm interested in looking at my family and family history but not sure where to start. I've been on a few family tree websites but there always too expensive. Does anyone know any free websites to search for family history or if not a cheap one?

Many Thanks

Start with the LDS (Church of the Latter Day Saints)
http://www.familysearch.org/

They also provide a free family tree software programme.
The information is fairly reliable, but not 100% as it is all provided by amateurs (like you and I).
Good luck, and have fun
the first thing you need to spend time doing is getting into some order the living relatives on all sides of you family and also finding who the older living relatives are. These are the ones who will have the information that will link you back into the published census records (1901) and this is a very good way of establishing occupations, religions, residences and family groups. If u have a living grandparent, they should know their own parents names in full and their wedding anniversary, also, they may even know of grandparents or great grandparents from their own early years. this is a much underused oral source and should be recorded for research purposes should the oporunity arise.

Genes Reunited is only 7.50 a year and you can get to the 1901 census through them. Otherwise you can get the FreeBMD site or GENUKI, also free. First though, do as dot says and ask family members, but remember that you may find some unpleasant things that can upset them.

Thanks all for your help!!!, you've given me a great starting point
I'm doing some online family tree research at the moment. The most useful site I've found so far is www.ancestry.co.uk The annual fee is 70, but they're currently offering a 2 week free-trial which gives you unlimited access to census returns, BMD indexes etc. I've been able to trace my family back to the 1841 census in just a few evenings - unfortunately tracing back beyond then is a little more difficult. Genes Reunited, as has already been said, is excellent. I've found several links with my family and it's well worth the membership fee. Happy hunting!
a good all-purpose genealogical website portal is www.cyndislist.com - though it has so many gazillion links it might all be a bit much.
