What's Happened To Traditional Lego Sets?

When I was a lad in the sixties I had a Lego set in a wooden box that was divided off into various brick sizes and shapes from which you could use your imagination to make whatever you wanted. Now it seems you can only get a set with bricks that only make one particular item. I have been looking for a set similar to what I had for my grandson but I cant find anything. Anybody had the same problem?

The manufacturers of Lego were forces to 're-invent' the product (through the introduction of sets linked to film and TV programmes) because, with the advent of electronic games, etc, hardly anybody was buying the original stuff. The change in marketing transformed Lego from a brand which was in danger of disappearing altogether to one which again dominates High Street toy shops.

So you can't really blame the manufacturers for moving to the themed sets. However, as Danny's link shows, the basic components are still available if you look hard enough for them.
