think my generation used it at all.

Its a useful concept that I guess we have never needed before....like not needing to describe watches and clocks as analogue before digital ones came along. When it was not publicly acceptable to be anything other than a man or a woman then there didn’t need to be any kind of word for people who did not feel they were in either group....and more subtly perhaps people who don’t want to be defined by their gender.
