What year did that advert come out and what was it advertising? The boy wanted a racer but his dad was not keen on buying him one. I think the boy ended up saving his pocket money instead. thanks

Was it for Yellow Pages? I think his Dad did buy him the bike he wanted in the end.

If I remember correctly, the guy in the advert also played Kevin Websters father in Coronation Street.

The ad. ran from 1983.

(and he were right about that saddle! )

dave_j, I was trying to think of the last line in that advert !!! Cheers !
Yeah it was for Yellow Pages and last line was " i was right about about that saddle though"
The last line of the ad was when the father (the guy that was in Corrie ofr a while) peeped through the curtains to watch his lad riding off and said <smug>"I told him that seat was like a razor blade"</smug>

Yes, I also think it was Yellow Pages. The dad mentally tortures the boy, dismissing the bike as being substandard, including the "And look at that saddle - be like sitting on a razor blade!" remark, then hands him back the brochure and saying "Maybe next year, eh, son?" - at which the boy slinks off, eyes cast down, trying not to cry. Then on the morning of his birthday the dad peeps through the curtains at the lad getting on his brand new bike, ducking back as the boy looks up (the boy gives a knowing little smile), then as he rides off, the dad says "I were right about that saddle!"

These days the boy would probably be found swinging from the light fitting, having been wracked with depression at not getting what he wanted. Or else, he'd sue his dad for emotional damage.
