oh dear. will the government just shrug and allow the referendum vote to be bypassed? they could of course invoke the parliament act - or is that only there for really important national interest issues (like the hunting act 2004)?

would that be the democratically unelected peers ?
That would be the end of the House of Lords
well that's what the Parliament act is for. The last two uses were for rather fatuous issues, this would be a proper usage. As much as the SGB flap about desperately trying to find ways of welching on the will of the people, it will not stop brexit.
Let's wait for the result of this wish is going before the court.
Lord Bridges of Headley, Minister for Exiting the EU, told peers in July: "The government's position is that there is no legal obligation to consult Parliament on triggering Article 50", since "it affects the position in international law and not in domestic law".
We (well, I) knew all that ^^^^ before voting.

Don't worry - Theresa May will defeat any objection in the Lords by hypnotising them with her magic grapes:

magic grapes SP? makes a change from sour grapes.

the magic grapes won't be deployed until october - and only then assuming their learned judge-ships decide the government doesn't need consulting.
This could be the end of Brexit?
I find it difficult to believe the number of straws around remainers find to cling to. It'll be the end of Brexit when we are out.
Just think about what Hopkirk posted! if we got rid of the House of Lords completly, the money we would save would pay for our membership to the EU for many years to come.
And we'd have betrayed our country and put ourselves in the control of external forces for ages. Of course no good citizen would be able to sleep well again knowing what they had done.

No the sensible solution would be to replace the upper house with a democratically elected chamber.
// of course no good citizen would be able to sleep well again knowing what they had done //. seems like some of the Brexit voters are starting to think that way now OG.
nice idea gulliver but the annual cost of both Houses is dwarfed by the gargantuan EU contribution.
Not a chance!
