I am about to lay a new lawn and wondered what was best to use top soil or another product to level out site.

will you be using seed or turf?

good topsoil is fine but add a genral ferterliser and if you will use seed make sure you compact the soil before you sow the seed sow around sept and mix you seed with moist compost a day or two before you sow this wil swell the seed with moisture to give the seed a good start and birds tend not to eat seed as they like seed to be dry you need about 2oz of seed per sq yard spread the seed mixture and lightly rake it in to the soil and water every day with a fine sprinkler

save some seed for bare patches and you should see the grass in about 2 weeks do not use too much seed as this will not be of any benifit

oh one more thing, water the area well two days before you sow
I used a thin layer of potting compost...levelled out on top of the soil.
