Is there a hard and fast rule to new car tax? We were talking last night about new cars and the subject of taxing them popped up.
There seemed to be a bit of confusion about it. Some say all new cars are already taxed for you. Others say none ever are and of course some others say it all depends, (on what I don't know).

Whenever I have bough a new car (including recently) the price was broken down into the price of the car plus £35 for road tax. I would never simply assume that tax was included

Fair enough f-f. Have to say that none of us are actually buying a new car (I wish) it was just a topic of conversation.
It depends where you buy the car. Some sales rooms include six months tax. Some don't.

Ah, so the 'all depends' people would be right. Cheers waterboatman.
If I was buying a new car I would insist that tax was part of the deal.
When you buy a new car you try and squeeze as much into the deal as possible - road tax is usually a gimme - as I was choosing a very individual specification I managed to get them to include a tracker with 2 years cover.
Now the rules have changed the new owner has to tax the car. If the garage taxed it, the new owner would have to tax it before he could drive it on the road.
"This also means you won’t be able to negotiate with a dealer to include six months’ tax as an incentive when buying a new car. It’ll be your responsibility to tax a car you’ve just bought before driving it home – or else you’ll risk a fine."

We picked up our new car last week and it was taxed. We checked several days before we picked it up, it was all done and in Mr U's name.
Seems like everything has been made easier since the change in tax. :)
