I could have been pondering over those for ages and still not have come up with 13 across ABNER I have never come across that word before. Thanks again.

Name of a character (presumably an army chief?) who said the quote given.
Abner Doubleday was a General in the Civil War on the 'Yankee' side and is said to have invented baseball.
...but THIS Abner is the captain of Saul's army in the second book of Samuel.
