On Windows 2000 or XP, double click My Computer, right click the drive you want to scan (probably C:), click "properties" and under the "Tools" tab, go into error-checking > check now and tick all the boxes. The computer will need to be rebooted as windows has tied up some of the files to be checked. I can't remember Windows 98 (it could be the same), is it start > programs > accessories > system tools > scandisk?
