Untick the "important" update every single time ?
More evidence of MS's control freakery. This sort of imposition being more and more the norm from everywhere.
In Windows 7, click the Start button.
Type 'update' into the box.
Click on 'Windows Update'.
Click 'Change settings'
Select 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'.
Click 'OK'

(Windows 8 will, hopefully, be similar)

When I go to turn off my windows computer it just goes to 'installing Updates' automatically if there are any.
That must be because you opted to avoid the hassle of choosing what to update and when so have set it to auto download and install. Follow Chris' advice to change that.

Do as Buenchico states and it will not install any updates unless you specifically agree to them.

Will do, windows computer is out of action at the moment. I am using a very old mac mini on an out of date apple operating system.
Thanks Buenchico - you're a star! I'm on Windows 7 and wanted to stop the automatic Windows 10 download which happened to my husbands laptop and is proving to be a pain in the proverbial!
Ive had windows 10 installed for about 6 months, but it still wont let me "activate it" All seems to work fine at the moment though, I just have a little thing down in the corner telling to "Activate Windows" If they are so keen for people to have Windows 10, let me activate it!!
more bill gates crap eddie
Someone has written a small program called GWC Control Panel.

You install this and it stops the "nagging" screens for Windows 10 and also stops it installing.

Very small program simple to download and install

When I log on to google i get a message that windows no longer updates XP and VISTA. Obviously wants me to install windows 10.

Why all this paranoia about not wanting windows 10? They have given us all the previous versions with no probs.
Every new version of Windows seems to have had issues. Every time someone's bunch of pet projects are added to make things different just for the sake of it and spoiling what you already used to have. Win 10 is more invasive; for example, (and interestingly pertinent to this this thread) updates are forced on you. The best they offer is forcing you to set a future date/time for installation. To overcome this you can either turn the service off and on, or there are .msi files out there you can install that at least tells you there are updates available for when you wish to get them. Then there is the default set up that says it can grab your data etc. There is a lot of control irritants to deal with and if you are not in the know it's impossible to know what side effects turning them off will cause in the future. MS appears to be becoming a dodgy supplier, like many commercial concerns they seems to wish to monitor/control your kit and what you do.

Have done as Buenchico says so I hope I will not be forced onto W10.
