what machine are you using?
I have a toshiba HD, DVd / VHS recorder ... you can do anything with it... vhs to hard drive, dvd to vhs etc... 6 combos
if you only have a few, it might be more economical to take them to a specialist shop and have them do it.
If you have a VHS player and a DVD recorder you can "play" the VHS tape in the VHS player and record the input on to a DVD on the DVD recorder.

However you have to make sure the cables and settings are right so the DVD recorder is recording what is coming IN from the VHS player.

This can be fiddly to set up at first.
you will require a dual/combi DVD/VCR player recorder for starters. Plenty about. I had so many VHS films to convert to DCD I bought an extra recorder. They are quite reasonable. Put your VHS tape in the slot and load a blank DVD. Start your VHS to Play and set the DVD to record. You can monitor it on TV to pause (for adverts etc). That is a basic explanation. There is dubbing and other things.
The transfer adapter cable / software kit available at the following link for £6 or similar should do the job:-

I've got a old sony video player, I did think about sending them to be done but I would hate for them to be lost, I want to put them on to a iMac
I didn't realise you had a working VCR and where you wanted to put the recordings. Forget the dual/combi then and just buy the leads suggested.
Buy this bit of kit first then follow VHG's instructions.
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation Scart into VHS rear outlet, 3RCA cables into appropriate DVD recorder sockets ( AV3) click DVD recorder to record via AV3 switch VHS to play.
I'm same as pomona - I have a Toshiba 3 in 1 system.
If you live anywhere near me, I'd be more than willing to copy them onto DVD for ya ..... free of charge as well :)
