If you get fined it can cost you up to £1,000.Is it worth it?
// Is it a legal requirement to have a licence - so by not having one does it become illegal?// islay

no islay you have to have a machine which is capable of getting tv
2% of population dont have one apparently ( tee vee I mean )

the loop hole of using a laptop to receive teevee on internet feed is being closed they say

thisis chadda bank thread not law ....
Is this you just showing off nailit? "Look at me everyone I'm a non conformist, aren't I cool"
Peter, OK so if you have a receiver (the OP has already stated that he has) Does that now become illegal? If so when he is caught does his previous history have a bearing in his fine or sentence? If he is on parole? Does getting caught without a licence and therefore possible breaking the law again make it all the more serious?
I know someone taken to court for not having a license.
Ummmm, what was their penalty?
Nothing as far as I can remember. I paid for one and that was that.
Nailit......you make it sound as if those of us who do pay for a licence are mugs.....

I'm not......and I happily pay what I consider a bargain price for some excellent TV and some even more excellent radio.......x
dont know what happened tothem Islay - fine I think
no they arent fine - they were fined

I dont keep a tally of what happens to those without a licence ....
cut off their tuning knob hand ? Brand them with no-TVL on their foreheads ? - Make them watch all those repeats over and over again ?

One way to legally not pay a TV licence would be to move to Belgium Holland or France, in the channel coast areas you can pick up UK terrestrial TV and you do not need a licence.
Just a comment but did you all know that the 'TV Detector' vans always were a con job?. They were just an empty van with a big fake antenna on the roof and the TV Detector sign in big letters on the side. They were intended to scare people into buying a licence. They would park outside an unlicensed address while the driver walked up and down the road with a clipboard. A second man was inside the van turning the antenna round.
They were very effective there was always a rush to buy TV licences when one had been round an area.
Some cant risk a crminal record or lose their hard earned property via court proceedings.
agree Eddie
they all did it on addresses ( and those addresses without a licence )

altho in the court cases - the flicker of the tv on the walls thro the window stars heavily in evidence

this is clearly a light news day - I note 90 contributions on tee vee licences
Even the BBC had to admit the TV detectors were fake

It's just like the poll tax - if you've no good name to preserve or assets to lose what can the courts do, put people in jail at huge taxpayer expense?
I suppose Gypsy's/travellers are the same, never pay but how many get fined?
" dont keep a tally of what happens to those without a licence ....
cut off their tuning knob hand ? "
