99. There has been much discussion between "funicular railway" which is a method of travel and goes down as well as up and "Starlight Express". I favour the latter but have no reason for this answer.

Have read the story on which musical is supposedly based but can't find story of musical itself. Has anyone solved the reasoning behind the clue?

jenniferd To date I cannot see any cryptic connection between the two answers that most of us are working with, and the clue. If I was answering Chris Tarrants programme I would choose funicular but we only have 2 to choose from ! There must be some other suggestion out there. Any ideas anybody?
I too have got starlight express,I am not really happy with it,but if I do not find another it will have to do.Funicular Railway,I thought about it but discarded it,because it goes down as well as up,and the clue being THE UP TRAIN should rule it out anyhow.Still working on it though.
jenniferd Razza Quote from the last race in the SE story "The final is held on the uphill track" as distinct from all the earlier races This quote originates from the story of The Original London Plot which is on www.apt-p.com/StarlightExpress.htm Tell me only if you think that it is relevant !!
Surely the trains go down as well as up in Starlight Express, same problem with the funicular railway.
Could it be PASSENGER............It has 9 letters! Or perhaps the name of a city i.e. EDINBURGH/CAMBRIDGE followed by express. HELP - I don't know!

Lapis If you look at the story you will see that the final race specifically is mentioned as being held on an uphill track making Rusty the up train as opposed to earlier races that are on the flat. Maybe that point is rather too remote. However if you look even further somewhere in the story you will see that the "passenger coaches" noses go up in the air! The up-train You are right it could be passenger followed by coaches. Have a look. Once again if you dont think its relevant no matter. It does seem a bit far fetched even for Rainbow but it could be Magic!

Hello Magic1. Thank you - have now read the story and see your reasoning for the answer being SP. Is it a good enough answer though as doesn't seem to match the compiler(s) usual efforts?
jenniferd I followed your lead. I suppose it could be either SE or PC or neither ! Usually the clues are straightforward in the end, so you might chose SE on that count. Still have not made up my mind but am no longer going for FR
jenniferd I did not follow your abbr SP. Presumably the answer hangs on express or passenger coaches Hope I have not confused the issue. we still have two answers to choose from !

My mistake Magic1 - I meant SE (Starlight Express). I don't think passenger or coaches will be in the answer.

Your reasoning for that answer is good but somehow doesn't seem a Rainbow reasoning if you get my drift!!!

Jenniferd Thanks end of story !
Magic1 I think that has made my mind up.
Razza. Very mysterious - can you let us in on the secret?!
LAPIS Read the link that Magic1 posted.
In the link posted my Magic, the final is on the uphill track, but it has to be rerun - this time on the downhill track. So the last race is downhill. This leads me back to my original answer of funicular railway. Just my thoughts to add to the confusion...
Razza: Still v. confused. I have read and re-read all the links - which one do you mean?
Lapis www.apt-p.com/StarlightExpress.com just in case you miss it twice

I've gone for funicular railway - the whole purpose of it is to help you go up (a mountain for example) Everything that goes up has to come down so the fcat that a F R goes down as well is not really relevant. (In my view)

But what a pig of a quiz! - Any help out there with 24 or 34?

Thanks

Oceantrader: 24 - think of another name for a sly person (animal!) + Tommy Steele song. The definition is an amphib. military vehicle.

34. Def. livery carriage. What would you call a place of business? Then remove the 'P' for parking.
