Bit surprised about the lack of a discussion. If the worst really has happened, then this could be very serious indeed......4 million customers may be affected.

I saw a Talk-Talk woman being interviewed on Channel Four news last night and she couldn't even say if the data had been encrypted or not !

I would have left Talk Talk after the first hack...

Thanks Ummm...I missed that !
I think I've seen a number of threads on talk-talk lately that I've not entered as it doesn't affect me. Only came in this one to find out, why another :-)

News is suggesting the government must do something. Not sure why. I can see they may wish to be involved but this is surely an issue for the tech/engineer guys to solve. This security thing is always going to be a race between the good and bad guys, much as virus issues are. Anyone could get broken into. (But those companies with sense must surely ensure sensitive data isn't accessible from the public systems ? Maybe allowing users to get to their own data makes that impossible, I don't know: in which case the whole concept is wrong.). But my opinion of commercial companies is they don't have a clue nor much care. As long as they make profit and more profit that's all their goal is.

OG...wht is very worrying about this case is that nobody from TT could say yesterday, if the data has been encrypted or not before the attack !

Surely every company that holds our sensitive data must hold it in a encrypted manner ?
Yes and that was the CE mikey. Bet she's having some sleepless nights.
I get the impression that a criminal outfit can extract info eventually from even encrypted data. Maybe it depends on the level of encryption. So one may only be buying time anyway.

I believe previous attacks suggested they held the data in plain text. Must have fixed that surely ? Problem is most of the board wouldn't know the questions to ask. One needs the Engineering department heads who should know.
It is the Mail, but this is worrying if they are targeting customers:

It amazes me that people think their data is safe online it never has been and probably never will be. Even with encryption we have the UK government pressing for all encryption to have a back door that they can access and if they can access it who else

OG...well, if they had previously held the data in plain text and had an attack, then its completely and utterly unacceptable that they should have continued to hold data in plain text, and therefore be caught again !

Unbelievable !
This company is a shambles. I'm now glad they messed me around a couple of years ago, as I ditched them and quickly signed up with another provider. Thank you Talk Talk!

Another point; as they sponsor the X Factor, it will be interesting to see if they have the cheek to churn out their usual self adulation adverts tonight. These prime time commercials must cost them tens of thousand of pounds or maybe millions over the length of the series.

To me, it sounds as though this money should have been invested back into the company. From my point of view, at the very least, some of it should have been ploughed back into staff training.

Like most people in Britain, I pay all my bills by DD. But bearing in mind what has happened to TT, should we be considering going back to sending cheques in the post again ?
