Flights to South america

Why are there not many direct flights from London Heathrow or Gatwick  to destinations in South America?

Primarily because not many people want to fly from the UK to South America.  Having been on a number of flights (Europe - S America - Europe) the only one that was even close to being full was Buenos Aires - Paris on a Friday night.
