I would love to travel by train through the Alps with Salzburg as a final destination. Does anybody have experience of a trip like this preferably doing it on a budget and know of any useful info or websites?

Many thanks in advance

Suggest you contact Ffestionniog Travel; they're specialists in rail travel bookings, been doing it for 30 years and are part of the famous Ffestioniog Railway in Wales. Their web-site is http://www.festtravel.co.uk/Ffestiniog_Travel.htm

They'll give you free advice, and plan and book your journey. My son works in their travel department, ask for Dan.

Also try the man in seat 61 - www.seat61.com I did this journey many years ago when I was 14 - totally brilliant!

pinotage - not exactly budget travel is it.

pootle - I went to do some work in a little village in the french outback for a couple of months a few years back and booked each train journey independantly through  http://www.raileurope.co.uk/inter-rail/

Wonderful experience travelling through the french countryside on cronky old trains and waiting in empty train stations for a one-carriage train, but it was quite cheap (at the time).  If you do this I am green with envy!! Have fun.

if you are thinking of the italian alps check out this web site www.trenitalia.it
