Mull Of Kintyre

19:47 on Wed 26/Jan/05 We're going to for a break on the Mull of Kintyre later in the year - can anyone tell me if there is a ferry from the mainland to the Mull - as it looks like it's going to be a long old drive all the way round.  If there is a ferry - do you have to pre-book?

There isn't a direct ferry any more, there used to be one to Campbelltown but it hasn't run for a few years. You could take the Ardrossan to Arran ferry, drive to the top of Arran and take the Lochranza to Claonaig ferry which takes to to the top of the Kintyre peninsular. You have to prebook the Ardrossan ferry but the Lochranza was just a turn up last time I used it.

www.calmac.co.uk is the website for the ferries serving the area.

Take it from someone who lives there.  The drive is spectacular.  Take the main road coming down and use the east road by Carradale if you have time on the way home.  Even more spectacular views - weather permitting.  The Lochranza ferry can be a bit dodgy.  It goes off if it's windy.  Locals don't tend to use that route.
