changing from BT line to other company. Charges?

Just signed up to BT phone line and want to switch to another company like Talk Talk but BT want to charge me �90 for doing this. I thought that changing line rental to another company even within first 12 months was painless as other company would just take over BT line.

No, when you signed up to BT you will have agreed to a 12 month contract and to change to another supplier during this time, they will want you to pay the money they would have got if you had kept the line for the full 12 months.

and make sure it is only 12 months as a lot make it 18 months now
