I'm going to central america (belize, honduras, el salvador) in a few weeks and want to know if my HSBC 'solo' card will be accepted in ATM's out there? I'm taking my mastercard as well, but won't use that to withdraw money due to the high charges. Should I take travellers cheques instead?? Any advice much appreciated!

Does it have maestro on the back of it?

yes, it does
As long as it is a Maestro then it will work just fine.
As above although you may encounter a few problems, but nothing your mastercard can't sort out
