Portland, Oregon.

Has anyone ever had a holiday in Portland? We plan to go in June 2009, but this mainly for my cousins' wedding but we thought we might as well make the most of it and try to take in the local area. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Firstly, welcome to the U.S.! Chris' site provides a lot of information. But, if you enjoy flowers, don't miss some of the premier rose gardens. June will be wonderful time for roses. http://www.northwestwoodworking.com/visiting.h tml ... This, along with Chris' site will keep you busy...

Visit the Columbia valley and possibly do some backwoods treking.

Visit Mount St Helen's site. The scale of the devastation is amazing.

If you want a multi site holiday, visit Seattle as well.

Thanks for those answers. My cousin actually lives in Seattle but his intended lives in Portland.

Since asking the question, I've spoken to his dad and I'm not convinced I should go because her family are mega rich. I mean MEGA rich. And the plan now is to have the wedding in Carmel.

To give you some idea of the money factor, her family have told my Uncle to book his flight to New York and then a private executive jet will fly them to Carmel. I mean, this is just a totally different planet.

Her family own a large helicopter company. They are the ones you see on TV putting out forest fires. My cousin is one of the leading pilots for the company.

So we'd love to go, but just can't imagine turning up for that kind of wedding with a card and a set of bath towels or something.

hopefully they wont be looking for pressies - but of course going or not will all depend on whether you can afford the trip. If you can then you should - hopefully despite his success family will still be important.

Definitely think you should go. I'm sure that they will be delighted to have family over from the UK. Buy them something small but tasteful like a really beautiful candle. If the wedding is in Carmel it's a lovely area and you can have a great holiday in San Francisco.

I agree! Your family will love it if you visit from the UK and so will the other guests. The likelihood is that you will be the centre of attention with your 'cute' accent. Definately take a present but pehaps something more British - something you could only get here.

And as for Carmel, we stayed there last year and the area is gorgeous. You can visit SF but also you must do the drive down Big Sur and stop at the restauarnt Nepenthe for a coffee or lunch overlooking the Pacific - heaven!

GO, you won't regret it!

Sorry for not replying sooner. Thanks for those answers. Very helpful. I don't think my accent will be that novel because my cousin is from round here and he knows their family.

You may have convinced me to do it now!

We had actually thought of booking for San Francisco before we heard about the wedding, so we will probably go.
I'll let you know.

Thanks again folks!
