I am going to New York by myself for 14 days in a couple of weeks time and i am looking for suggestions for places to visit. Either shops, restaurants, bars, museums or other places of general interest. Perhaps a few places off the beaten track that do not appear in the usual tourist guides.

Century 21 is a great bargain designer clothes shop, right next to ground zero. It's had a bit of coverage in the UK recently, but never seems to appear in guide books. Well worth a visit, it's like a massive TK-Max. Also, try limo or car service hire for an atfernoon to get you around in style- it is very cheap compared with the UK. A decent car and driver for an afternoon will be around $100, which at UK prices is quite reasonable. A limo a bit more. Any hotel will sort this for you. Visit times square and get yourself into filming for Letterman or one of the other daily shows - always a good laugh.
Just got back myself,..put one day aside for Metropolitain Museum of Art (Central Park East) that was fantastic, the Guggenheim was a let down, only half the museum was open, so don't bother with that. Try a helicopter ride ober Manhattan(about $100 for 10 minutes. - well worth it. (book in advance) Take a walk around the less touristy places like Hell Kitchen, most of the old rough charm has gone, but you still get to see how the other half lives(blocks between west35-west55 streets ) Enjoy!
McSorley's pub in the village is great as well - they only serve their own microbrew (in light and dark varieties). It's got a friendly young crowd, and the barmen are all great for a bit of chat and banter. Have a wonderful time!
Take the Staten Island ferry. It's only around 5c each way and you get great views of Manhatten and the Statue of Liberty. Don't get off in Staten Island though!
I second Century 21 - fantastic place if you like yer threads. You must visit the famous Katz's Deli (E Houston St) for a hot pastrami sandwich - stacked high and delicious. Agree about the Staten Island ferry. It's free now. Walk round Greenwich village - unique atmosphere. If you like art walk round SoHo too.
