Motoring in Austria

Being seconded to Graz in Austria for 1 year, does anyone have any experience of running a car in Austria?
What does road tax, insurance etc cost?
Would it be better to buy a banger over there? or would it be better to take my UK car? would it have to be re-registered locall and insured locally?
I am a 61 year old male, my wife is 53, both of us have held full licensces for many years and both have maximim Uk NCD

Used to drive my truck in Austria. Beautiful country and nice people. They are well aware they will get 6' of snow each winter and unlike over here, the country does not grind to a halt! They prepare from October onwards. Other thing I like is that the green traffic light flashes 4 times before going to amber, so no excuse for jumping a light!! As to your other questions, can't really help. Best bet might be to go to http://www.oeamtc.at/ who are the Austrian AA.
Click on the e mail icon top right, then when the next page comes up, in the section marked 'Kontakt:Reisen', click on 'Touristiche Anfrage' (Tourist Questions). Fill in the e mail form with your questions (in English, as nearly everybody speaks it) and hopefully they will help you out.

Taking a UK car over there should not pose a great problem and there are EU wide rules regarding this allowing you to use it on UK plates for a certain length of time - a year, I think. However, buying a car locally has a lot going for it, especially in the event of an accident, quite apart from having the steering on the correct side and being covered for the motorways without an additional charge.
