If you can take a whale watching trip at Santa Barbara. Also the sealions on the pier at San Fran are amazing. Remember once you get on that coast road there is no way off. Lots and lots and lots of cliffs and bendy roads. OK if you like that sort of thing we got heartily fed up of them.
So... OK, from Portland to San Fran... don't be susceptible to car sickness. The road is, in places, quite twisty and it is a two lane in many places. Don't miss the Carmel & San Simeon area of Big Sur. It is a very beautiful 90 mile tight turned coastal stretch of road. Agai, take your Dramamine.
Keep in mind, it is coastal and the weather can be unpredictable, especially in the early Spring months... say through May. (March is th elast chance to see whale pods).

Here are some links to things not to miss... enjoy! (Take your time... 4 to 5 days, at least).

Welcome to the U.S.!

I know that this is being pedantic but Santa Barbara, Carmel and Big Sur are all south of San Francisco and therefore out of the way if driving from Portland OR to SF.
