dohop.com is good start if you know your destination.
also skyscanner.net have the prices live so you can see exactly how much your going to have to pay.
Why don't you look on the airlines own websites, i.e Monarch, BA,Easyjet,Thompsonfly it is surprising the good deals you can find .
Sometimes you are better looking at each individual airline than searching through sites such as travel supermarket as some airlines are not covered by them.

I know that when we tried to fly Dubline - LA we were getting a v high price and loads of connections on each of the price comparison sites we tried, but when we tried the aer lingus site we got direct flights at a fraction of the cost!
I always find www.travelsupermarket.com good.
Sorry.. Read you question again!! And you haved tried travel supermarket.

I am never with it on a monday morning :-)
i am in the middle of trying to book flights myself and tried various ones but expedia seem cheapest for me so far
