Why would a shop even notice what issue of credit card you are using? Of course you can use it.

Shops had no reason ever to be wary about accepting them. If there were instances of shops being wary it was the result of ignorance and media hype.

Given that the transaction in most cases is authorised online at the time of purchase there is no earthly reason for them to refuse. In any case it's Visa or Mastercard who pay the merchant, not Northern Rock.
