I only have a couple of months left on my british passport, can I still travel to France

Theoretically, you don't need a passport to move within the European Union, but in practice you do, especially after the 9/11 thing. As long as it is valid (ie you are not travelling after the expiry date) it is perfectly alright to travel anywhere in the world (including France), though you might be quizzed by the immigration people if there is less than 6 months left on it.
I would renew it as soon as possible - you don't have to wait until it expires and this is (usually) the quiet time of year at the passport offices.
