He's been told rubbish. For the EU his passport just needs to be valid.

In fact for Spain it can be up to a year out of date - but I wouldn't want to rely on that with airport checkin staff who probably won't know this twist to the rule.
The Home Office gives general advice that a passport should be valid for 6 months after the date of your return. This is because some countries make this requirement.

However the Spanish Embassy on their website state that for British travellers the passport should be valid for 90 days after the date of your return.

Check with the company your son has booked with as some travel operators stipulate the six month rule as a condition for travel
http://www.maec.es/Consulados/Londres/en/MenuP pal/Informacion+y+vinculos+de+interes/Informac ion+general+para+espanoles+en+el+Reino+Unido/n ationals_information.htm (yes long) which is the official Spanish consular site says 'You do not need a minimum of validity in your passport to travel to Spain'.

Which site were you looking at? If it's http://spain.embassyhomepage.com it's a commercial site, not an official one

The ask tour operator advice is good though, but check if it's a condition of booking or just incorrect advice.
