Not sure if this is why but here goes. During the Dark Ages the witch cast spells and curses and caused general mayhem. She cursed a relationship between a man from Glastonbury and a girl from Wookey became a monk and threw blessed water

Sorry computer went funny.

She cursed a relationship between a man from Glastonbury and a girl from Wookey so that it would fail, the witch having been jilted herself before. Anyway, this bloke became a monk and eventually went to find her. He threw blessed water over her, turning her to stone where she remains.

I guess the coins might represent the water.
