I started telling him the best way was in the frying pan but he was looking blank so i said use the microwave

What is your idea of a 'proper' pancake? I cook them in a very large frying pan so they are big but thin.
Those small thick ones are not pancakes to me, pancakes should be rollable or foldable, depending what you are putting on them.

The same large thin bit a bit thicker than a crepe but not as thick as an American pancake

The little fat ones are drop scones in my book.
I only ever had them with sugar and lemon juice until the Queen's Silver Jubilee when Little Chef (I think) put Jubilee pancakes on the menu. I was hooked.
