Depends where you go - if you frequent touristy bars & restaurants in the city centre run the risk of being ripped off, but you can still find food & drink quite a bit cheaper than in the UK - probably about half the price for food and about a third of the price for beer, though Prague is getting more expensive by the week and some places seem to think tourists have bottomless pockets and no common sense. If you go out of the city centre to the places where real people live prices drop dramatically; I worked in Prague for a time, and where I was I considered I'd been cheated if I paid more than about 2 for 2 courses and alitre of beer. In this kind of area expect to pay about 60p/litre for beer. Out in the sticks they practically pay you to eat and drink! A round of large beers for myself and a dozen or so work colleagues in a little country bar came to about 4 quid! I was last there earlier this year, and city centre prices are rising fairly steadily - go now while it's still cheap to eat & drink. Accomodation can be pricey, though, especially in the centre - many hotels are frankly overpriced and again, you'll do much better 20mins or so by tram outside the centre.
We were there in May and bought a two course meal in an Italian bistro in the city centre for about 12 a head. Beer is quite cheap but avoid the bars which are full of English lads on a stag week-end because you'lll probably be ripped off price-wise. It's a beautiful city but wrap up warm and take comfortable walking shoes as there are cobbles everywhere and all the best guided tours are on foot, following guides waving their umbrellas or sticks with coloured ribbons to ensure you don't lose your group. . If you need to use the trams which are very cheap and efficient, buy your tickets first (in shops or hotels) and punch them in the machines on board as soon as you board to validate them, otherwise you risk being fined. Have a good trip. And bring back some lovely Prague ham !

I literally got back from Prague today. I managed to get a 3 star hotel for 20 per night including breakfast - http://www.praguehotellocator.com/ This was about 1km from the centre, but they did have another 3 star directly in the centre for 18 per night but it was booked this weekend.

Beer wise, well, I was fortunate in having a Czech friend show me around Prague. In the touristy areas you can pay 2 for 1/2 litre beer BUT my friend showed us several places within 50 metres of Wenceslas Square where you could get 1/2 litre beer for 33p !!!! Just go for the proper Czech places, they might be back street but you'll save a fortune.

Dead right, Kebabmeister; as in most places, go where the locals go, and you'll do OK. Mind you, speaking a little Czech helps - and it's not a language you can pick up in 5 minutes. I went to lessons for 3 years and lived in Prague for a time, and my Czech is still very basic! BTW, Iusually stay in an area about 15-20 minutes out of the centre by tram, 10 minutes by Metro, and the very good B&B I use costs me about 4.50 a night - with the cheapest minibar I've ever come across!

Narolines, how long ago did you live there?

I couldn't resist visiting Prague since the return train fare was only 40 !!! (to Munich)

I was resident in Prague in 2000, there for a fair time in 2001 and have been going there 2 or 3 times a year since. Prices have climbed a lot in those 5 years, but really cheap places are still to be found if you know where to look. Sadly parts of the city centre are becoming another Euro-anywhere; a stroll down Wenceslas Square isn't anything like the pleasure it used to be.
