Why does recipe not rhyme with recite. Why is rhyme not spelt like time. Why is there an "F" in elephant. Hundreds more, bough,bow,cough,cow.

btw, rhyme is spelt similarly to thyme ;)

I suspect the little idiosyncrasies of our beloved mother tongue are there to help our European neighbours learn our language more easily.

I know at least two people who still use that way of saying it.
So should I ask for a recipe next time I'm at a till in a shop, I'm sure the girls on the checkouts have many.
I don't think it works the other way round Tony, but who can tell.

OK. Little difference how I spelt her pronounciation.
Most people in my company pronounce recipe as 'ressippy'.
As above, it isn't a pronunciation issue - rather the use of an archaic term.
