To get a "free" seat, though I thought I'd paid for that when I booked, you can check in from four days in advance. My flight is on Monday at 17.30 -does that mean I can check in from Thursday at 00.01 or from 17.30? Thanks

I would assume from 1730 though it might be earlier. You usually get an email when check-in opens.
From memory I think it's 4 x 24 hours so 17:30. It's been a while though, I'm sure it was 7 days the last time we used them but even then it went by departure time.
you can pay extra, not necessarily a huge amount, to book a particular seat, and that allows you to check in about a month early.

I checked in free for the outward flight but I've got to wait four days before the return flight before I can check in for free. I don't see why they can't let you check in for free once it is for four days before the outward flight. I am not remotely bothered about a particular seat.
from thursday 17.30 and they have started sitting you well apart if you dont pay for seat im just back from spain hubby was in seat 7b i was in 32 c luckily plane wasnt full so was able to go sit by him after take off
