Considering that a lot of people decided to stay only hours after the previous terrorist attack, just how many will take heed of this advice ?

Hopefully, most. I like Tunisia, some interesting cuisine too - N.Africa meets France.....les brics for example.

I would like to think most as their travel insurance would not be valid and their flights home may be cancelled.

I'm sure most will take heed. Many Tunisians have long held anti-western sentiments so in the current climate the recent attack really came as no surprise, but for the authorities to issue this advice I have to wonder just what information they have.

Most sadly. Package tours will - indeed have - stopped taking bookings. The plan is to build a wall along the Libyan border but I am not sure how effective that will be. Tunisia is a small country with well developed institutions and a strong sense of national identity (unlike notably Libya which suffered drastically from the destructive years of the Gaddafi dynasty) so I'd be hopeful that the temporary victory of the fundamentalists will be temporary

If they do stay they will now have no travel insurance at all. No insurance is valid if the official advice is not to go to the country.

People will have little choice since the airlines and travel companies are cancelling their bookings now. Thomas Cook and Thomson are bringing their customers home and have cancelled all activity until the end of October at least. This will account for the majority of UK visitors booked to the country this summer.

Having been uninsurable for 20 years ( colon cancer) - that isnt a big deal. Having insurance is a state of mind - for example how many 65 y olds THINK they are insured on holiday,but when they claim ....

We have heard little from the British Embassy in Tunis, will they be withdrawing, what about the safety of it's staff?

Presumably, like most Embassies, it is guarded. Just think what a propaganda coup it would be for ISIS to see British Diplomats running away.

What is so special about October 31, does Thomas Cook know something that the rest of us don't know?

It makes sense for the govt to issue a warning to tourists goven their assessment. Embassy staff are there on essential business and the advice does not apply to them as they are not in the 'red' areas
There have been very few instances of the FCO advising all travel to a country full stop. Somalia was one, and as I recall a country in W Africa I think also.

As a matter of interest.Do all insurance companies take that stance on colon cancer survivors. Uninsurable. As you know just had it myself.
