I have seen on a few tv programmes that american youths are presented with bead necklaces when there is some sort of celebration going on.

Just wondered if anyone knew why?

that's mardi gras, i believe. you swapped bead necklaces for kisses, etc..etc..

other than that, schools are really fond of giving you medals tied around your neck with ribbon for anything from good penmanship to the best Halloween costume.

If they are gold, green and purple beads, they are indeed Mardi Gras beads, and I hear that they are being sold across the United States as fundraising for hurricane relief. New Orleans is known for its Mardi Gras celebrations. Mardi Gras is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday - the beginning of the 40 days of Lent before Easter.
