Today, a friend and I were discussing what books we had read at school, as 'class readers for study'. As we are similar ages, we actually read almost the same books even though we went to school in different areas of the country.

What can you remember having to read? Please could you also indicate the decade? Thank you.

Well I started with Janet and John, early 1960's, Yilly.
Lord of the flies...animal farm...1984...early part of the 70's...
Fortunately I had read The Thirty Nine steps, not on our school's list but was an exam question. All the mysteries in the library
it was Janet & John for me in the 60's
David Copperfield and Richard II for GCE 'O'Levels....1960's
At primary mid 60's...it was green book..blue red ..a series of hard backs...I skipped Janet and John as I could read pre school...was put up a year after a term....smart tart ! Lol...

Yont, did you actually 'study' Janet and John?
To Kill a Mockingbird is the only one I can remember from my '80's education.

We also studied Hughes and Betjeman as well as A Midsummernight's Dream as part of our English syllabus.
Silas Marner, Henry IV Part I.
mid eighties, Macbeth, lord of the flies, romeo and juliet, animal farm
Early 80's-Midsummer Night's Dream and Animal Farm plus a shed load of crap Wordsworth poems and an in depth analysis of The Lady Of Shallot.

For O'Level English Lit in 84 -To Kill A Mockingbird and The Tempest
1970s - Pride and Prejudice, Silas Marner, Down and out in Paris and London, Far from the Madding Crowd, 1984,
I dont remember reading anything, but as I got grade A o level in English Literature I must have done. I remember we learnt chunks of the Gallic Wars in Latin. I do remember my first reading book, early fifties that started Sing, Sing, Sing, Sing Mother Sing......
The black pearl..catcher in the rye...loneliness of long distance runner...gosh it's coming back to me !!

I'll revise the question.......................

What books did you study for O levels or GCSE'S
Forgot Macbeth!
At primary school we used Beacon Books!
i had two favorite books reach for the sky and helen kellers life story
I'm guessing you mean secondary school? for me 60/70s Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, She stoops to conquer, Far from the Madding Crowd, The Kon Tiki Expedition,Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, Midsummer Night's Dream and Merchant of Venice. hated them all except Hardy.
well, without further ado - mum and I fought for Katie Mulholland by Catherine Cookson. Me anyway didn't know we could have got her over and over again in the library. The most wonderful book of my life. I still could read it but because I know the ending it would not be the same Conne
