We drove from San Francisco to LA in June.   We stopped off at Monterray (not too interesting) Carmel (lovely !!) then down the coast road Big Sur National Park but didn't stop.   Then we stopped overnight at San Luis Obispo.   Santa Barbara next then to L.A.

The views along the coast road are wonderful.  It is best to stop off  and visit and our overnight stop was about half way.

Enjoy yourself.

We did this a few years ago. We stopped overnight in Monteray, San Luis Obispo (nice town - very artisitic) and San Simeon. You could do it faster but we were taking it easy and enjoying the views. We also spent a few hours visiting the Hearst mansion near San Simeon, which I would definitely recommend.

I'd recommend the aquarium in Monterey, it was fabulous, and see the waterful at the Julia Pfeiffer Burns park.  It's really just a matter of parking the car and crossing under the road, and the waterfall is beautiful, falling onto the sand (see a picture here http://community.webshots.com/photo/93973722/141958203tN GEMW).  We left Monterey in the morning and got to Santa Barbara for overnight about 4:00.  You'll love it, it's a fantastic journey.  PS While in San Fran i'd recommend a restaurant called Chow.
